  • The South West Aboriginal Land and Sea Council is co-convening the Summit

  • The Summit theme is ‘Navigating the spaces in between’

The Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS) Summit will be held on Noongar Boodja, at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre, from 5-9 June 2023.

The South West Aboriginal Land and Sea Council (SWALSC) is co-convening the national Summit. SWALSC has worked closely with AIATSIS to provide cultural advice and ensure important Noongar protocols are incorporated into the program.

The Summit will be held in Perth for the first time, and hundreds of delegates from across Australia are set to attend. Delegates will discuss addressing current and future challenges and engage in opportunities to support and strengthen Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, knowledge and governance.

The 2023 theme is ‘Navigating the spaces in between’ and will focus on the brilliance and value of Indigenous ways of knowing, seeing and being in the world, and how we can re-imagine our future.

SWALSC and the six Noongar Regional Corporations will each have exhibition booths, providing information about the South West Native Title Settlement, and the Noongar Nation of Western Australia’s south-west.

Chief Executive Officer of SWALSC, Vanessa Kickett, said “SWALSC is proud to be co-convening the 2023 AIATSIS Summit, and we welcome delegates to Noongar boodja. We look forward to sharing our journey and shining a light on our incredible Noongar culture.”

“The Summit is an opportunity for SWALSC to share our story of the South West Native Title Settlement, its implementation and set up of the six Noongar Regional Corporations and importantly, the benefits the Settlement will provide to Noongar people.” said Brendan Moore, SWALSC Chair.
